As of April 13, 2026, the situation at the Cheboygan Dam in Michigan has escalated due to rapidly rising water levels. The water is currently at the ‘READY’ mark, measured at 12 inches below the top of the dam and increasing by 3 inches or more each day.
In response to this alarming development, Governor Gretchen Whitmer has declared a state of emergency for Cheboygan County. She emphasized the seriousness of the situation, stating, “Record snowfall last month and recent rain have elevated water levels, which could lead to possible flooding for local communities.”
To mitigate potential flooding, the Michigan Department of Natural Resources has activated five pumps to divert water around the dam. Additionally, two thousand sandbags have been strategically placed around the Cheboygan Lock and Dam to help direct water flow and protect infrastructure.
Residents living downstream have been urged to prepare for possible evacuations as the National Weather Service has issued a flood watch that will remain in effect until 8 a.m. on April 15, 2026. The US-23 bascule bridge in Cheboygan is set to be raised to prevent damage from debris in the river.
Local officials are taking every precaution to ensure the safety of the community. Richard Hill, a spokesperson for the Department of Natural Resources, stated, “We are putting through as much water as we can.” Meanwhile, Mike Janisse added, “The DNR is actively engaged with our partners to prevent the failure of the dam to the fullest extent possible.”
Residents are advised to secure outdoor items and move valuables to higher levels as a precautionary measure. The situation remains fluid, and officials are closely monitoring the dam and surrounding areas.
