Kal Somani, a US-based entrepreneur, is at the forefront of a historic $1.63 billion acquisition of the Rajasthan Royals, making it the first Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise to be sold for over a billion dollars. This monumental deal is expected to be finalized within the next four to five days, pending approval from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).
Somani, who has been a minority investor in the Rajasthan Royals since 2021, leads a consortium that includes notable figures such as Rob Walton and Sheila Ford Hamp. “We see huge potential with this investment, and we are excited for the future of the IPL,” Somani stated, highlighting the consortium’s vision for the franchise.
The Rajasthan Royals were previously owned by British-Indian businessman Manoj Badale, who held a 65% stake in the team. This acquisition marks a significant shift in ownership, as the Royals were initially bought by Emerging Media Ventures for just $67 million in 2007.
Somani is not only the founder and CEO of IntraEdge, Truyo & Truyo.AI, and Academian, but he also co-owns the Motor City Golf Club. His focus has been on data privacy, AI governance, and sports technology, positioning him as a forward-thinking leader in the sports industry.
The consortium also has stakes in other franchises, including Paarl Royals and Barbados Royals, further expanding its footprint in the cricketing world. This acquisition is seen as a strategic move to enhance the Royals’ competitive edge in the IPL.
As the deal progresses, observers are keenly watching how this acquisition will reshape the dynamics of the IPL and what it means for the future of the Rajasthan Royals. Details remain unconfirmed regarding the specific plans for the franchise under the new ownership.
