Michigan State hockey has secured a No. 1 seed in the NCAA tournament for the third straight season, marking a significant achievement for the program. The Spartans, with a record of 25-8-2 this season, are set to face the No. 4 seed UConn Huskies in the Worcester regional. This matchup will be the first-ever meeting on the ice between MSU and UConn.

Last season, MSU faced disappointment as they were eliminated in the first round by 4-seed Cornell. However, this year, the Spartans are riding high after winning their third consecutive Big Ten regular-season title. Coach Adam Nightingale expressed enthusiasm, stating, “We’re excited to get playing.” Freshman forward Ryker Lee echoed this sentiment, saying, “It’s real now, and I can’t wait.”

UConn enters the tournament with a record of 20-12-5, led by Ryan Tattle, who has contributed 13 goals and 19 assists. Joey Muldowney has also been a key player for the Huskies, scoring 17 goals this season. As the tournament approaches, MSU captain Matt Basgall remarked, “We’re extra excited because of the way it ended last year.”

The Frozen Four is scheduled to take place at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas on April 9 and April 11, should MSU advance. With 30 NCAA Tournament appearances, the Spartans are among the top teams in NCAA Division I history. Coach Nightingale noted the challenge ahead, stating, “It’s not easy to make the tournament, and now whoever you play is going to be a good team.”

As the excitement builds for the upcoming game, observers are keen to see how MSU will perform against UConn. With 10 games remaining in the season, the stakes are high for the Spartans as they aim for a deep run in the tournament.
