The NASA Artemis II mission is gearing up for a historic lunar flyby, with astronauts scheduled to observe the moon for approximately six hours on April 6, 2026. This mission marks the first crewed lunar flight in over 50 years, a significant milestone in space exploration.
The crew consists of four astronauts: Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, Christina Koch, and Jeremy Hansen. They recently completed a 41-minute manual piloting demonstration on flight day four, showcasing their readiness for the mission.

The moon is almost in full daylight, and the only way you could get that view is to be halfway between the two entities.” This perspective highlights the mission’s significance in understanding both the moon and Earth.
Christina Koch emphasized the human element of the mission, saying, “Being human up here is one of the coolest things about this mission.” The crew’s observations will be enhanced by their ability to perceive details that machines cannot, as noted by Kelsey Young, who stated, “The human eye is the most nuanced detector there is, especially when connected to a well-trained human brain.”
The Orion capsule, which has a habitable volume comparable to a camper van, will serve as the crew’s home during the 10-day mission. The astronauts have memorized 15 distinctive lunar features to photograph, ensuring a comprehensive exploration of the moon’s surface.
