Outlook Lite was a simpler alternative for users with entry-level smartphones or poor network connectivity. Launched in 2022, the app quickly gained popularity, surpassing 10 million downloads by 2024. However, Microsoft has announced that Outlook Lite will cease operations on May 25, 2026, effectively ending support for the app.
The decision follows the removal of Outlook Lite from the Google Play Store on October 6, 2025. Users have been advised to transition to the full Outlook Mobile app, which offers enhanced features and better performance. Microsoft has assured users that their existing emails, calendar items, and attachments will sync to the Outlook Mobile app after logging in.
In a message titled MC1276508, Microsoft confirmed the retirement and emphasized the importance of switching to the full app. “If you’re still using the ill-fated email app, you should switch to another service as soon as possible,” stated a company representative. Another expert recommended, “I recommend setting up an alternative app now.”
Outlook Lite was designed specifically for low-end devices and slower networks, aiming to provide a lightweight email solution. Despite its initial success, the consolidation of Microsoft’s mobile strategy around the Outlook Mobile app has led to this decision.
Users can utilize the Upgrade option in Outlook Lite to redirect to the Play Store for the full app. IT administrators have been informed that no special actions are required regarding the retirement.
Microsoft has assured users that their data will remain safe during this transition. Existing users are encouraged to act promptly to ensure a seamless switch to the full Outlook Mobile app before the retirement date.
