“I am disappointed, of course,” said Rebecca Lobo, reflecting on the recent developments surrounding the Connecticut Sun. The former UConn All-American expressed her sadness over the franchise’s struggles to remain in New England, stating, “It is sad for the fans, because it feels like Connecticut and New England should have a professional women’s franchise.”

The Connecticut Sun, which was bought by the Mohegan Tribe in 2003, has faced significant challenges in attracting free agents due to its location and the absence of a dedicated practice facility. Despite attempts to relocate to Boston or other areas in Connecticut, the franchise was ultimately sold for $300 million to a Houston group.

As the WNBA continues to grow, the Connecticut Sun’s departure leaves a void in the region. Lobo, who led UConn to its first undefeated season and national championship in 1995, has been a vocal advocate for women’s basketball and its expansion.

In a recent analysis of the upcoming NCAA Women’s Final Four, Lobo noted, “I think when you look at the starting groups for both sides, South Carolina has so much size.” This matchup will feature No. 1 South Carolina against No. 1 UConn, alongside No. 1 Texas facing No. 1 UCLA.

UConn’s top two post players, Serah Williams and Jana El Alfy, have struggled in the tournament, combining for only 28 points in four games. In contrast, South Carolina boasts standout players like Madina Okot, a 6-6 senior center averaging 13.2 points per game and known for her rebounding prowess.

Rebecca Lobo, now part of ESPN’s top women’s basketball crew for the Final Four, suffered an ankle sprain prior to the event but remains committed to providing insights on the game. She remarked, “It is going to be a great matchup and a close game.”

As the tournament progresses, the future of the Connecticut Sun remains uncertain, with fans left hoping for a revival of professional women’s basketball in the region. Details remain unconfirmed.
