The wider picture
The taco is a typical dish of Mexico, celebrated in various forms across the country. It has become a symbol of Mexican culinary heritage, with countless taquerias serving diverse variations of this beloved food. In Tijuana, the taco holds a special place in the hearts of locals and visitors alike, making the city a focal point for taco enthusiasts.
In a significant development, Tijuana’s Taco Museum opened its doors in April 2024, aiming to honor the story of the taco in Mexico. The museum features interactive spaces designed for family fun, allowing guests to engage with the history and cultural significance of this iconic dish. Miguel Aguayo, the general manager of the museum, stated, “They made the museum to give recognition to one of the typical dishes of Mexico which is the taco.”
The museum not only celebrates the taco but also showcases its ingredients and the various methods of preparation that have been passed down through generations. Visitors can even make their own tortillas, providing a hands-on experience that connects them to the culinary traditions of Mexico. Aguayo emphasized, “What we try to do with the museum is give the story and honor the story of the taco in Mexico.”
Among the highlights of the museum is a dedicated room that features Tijuana’s renowned taquerias, including Tacos Aaron, established in 1981, and Poblanos, which was ranked first among Tijuana’s taquerias during a recent visit. The museum also includes a life-size cow named Rosaura, symbolizing the importance of beef in traditional taco recipes. Aguayo expressed his passion for the adobada taco, stating, “As it should be,” referring to his favorite alongside lengua.
In addition to its educational aspects, the Taco Museum serves as a venue for private parties, making it a versatile space for celebrations. The Gamsan Group, which operates the Telefónica Gastro Park, is collaborating with the museum to further enhance the culinary experience in Tijuana. This partnership aims to bring more attention to the local food scene and attract tourists eager to explore the rich flavors of the region.
As the Taco Museum continues to gain popularity, it is expected to draw food lovers from around the world, eager to learn about the taco’s history and enjoy authentic Mexican cuisine. Aguayo hopes to feature different tacos from across the country, expanding the museum’s offerings and showcasing the diversity of this beloved dish.
The opening of Tijuana’s Taco Museum marks a pivotal moment in the recognition of the taco as a cultural icon. As observers look forward to the museum’s future developments, the taco’s legacy as a staple of Mexican cuisine is set to be celebrated like never before.
