Liverpool has completed the signing of defender Ronald Araujo from Barcelona on a season-long loan. The deal includes an option for Liverpool to purchase the player for approximately £47.14m (€55m). Araujo’s move to Anfield comes after he decided to seek more playing time in the Premier League.
Araujo, who is 27 years old, signed a new contract with Barcelona last year, extending until 2031. Liverpool will cover his full salary during the loan period, and it is understood that Araujo accepted a pay cut to facilitate the transfer. The defender is expected to begin training with his new teammates this week.
Araujo’s Farewell and New Chapter

Following his return, Araujo was rarely a starter, leading to a mutual decision that a change of environment would be beneficial. Barcelona had an opportunity to sell him to Juventus for around €50 million, but the club rejected that offer. Araujo chose to renew his contract at that time, and now he moves to a new league hoping to revitalize his career.
Liverpool’s Defensive Reinforcements
Liverpool’s decision to bring in Araujo addresses several defensive concerns. The club had not been actively seeking defensive reinforcements, prioritizing a wide forward, but saw this loan opportunity as a sensible move. Araujo can play as a centre-back or right-back, offering versatility to the squad.
