Berea training camp: Browns quarterbacks showcase deep ball, defensive line health concerns

Browns training camp: 6 winners and losers from 1st 10 days

Quarterback Competition and Offensive Line Dynamics

The Cleveland Browns training camp has seen shifts in the quarterback rotation, with Deshaun Watson taking first-team repetitions for two consecutive days, including Saturday. This marks a change from the previous rotation where Watson and Shedeur Sanders had split reps with the first-team offense through the spring and the initial eight days of camp. Coach Todd Monken had previously indicated that Sanders would receive the majority of snaps on Saturday, with a potential exception for an extra seven-on-seven session for Watson. However, Watson ran exclusively with the starters on Saturday, which was noted as his strongest overall throwing day of camp.

Watson’s performance on Saturday marked his third impressive showing during the week, following earlier struggles in two camp practices. The quarterback competition has seen 18 interceptions thrown by Watson, Sanders, and Dillon Gabriel over the first 10 days of camp, with Watson accounting for six in the first four days. The team also continues to rotate tackles Dawand Jones and Spencer Fano at left tackle with the first team, with Jones taking first-team reps on Friday while Fano worked with the second team.

The offensive line has faced challenges with cohesion, as the Browns entered camp with five new starters. Injuries have affected the group, with veteran center Elgton Jenkins, rookie center Parker Brailsford, and veteran guard Teven Jenkins missing multiple practices. Additionally, right tackle Tytus Howard left practice on August 8 due0 to an unspecified ailment. Despite these issues, KT Leveston has performed well, transitioning to right guard from tackle and showing improvement.

Standout Performances and Injury Concerns

Denzel Boston, a second-round pick, has been a standout performer, earning the title of offensive Most Valuable Player for the first 10 days of training camp. Boston has consistently made highlight-reel plays since rookie minicamp in May, despite the ongoing quarterback competition. On the defensive side, Jared Verse has been described as a dominant force, consistently performing as the best player on the field during the initial 10 days. He has reportedly been embraced by his new teammates and has shown a willingness to work with offensive linemen to help them correct issues during practice.

Conversely, wide receiver Cedric Tillman, a 2023 third-round pick, is in the final year of his rookie contract and has been running with the third-team, occasionally with the second-team. His first three years have been marked by multiple injuries, preventing him from building momentum. This camp is seen as crucial for Tillman, with a strong performance potentially generating trade interest.

The health of the defensive tackle position has been a concern, with the team at one point missing its top six defensive tackles. This led to defensive end Adin Huntington and undrafted rookie Tyreak Sapp stepping in as the top two tackles for a period. While Mason Graham has returned to practice, the exact timelines for other injured players are not yet available. Coach Monken has emphasized the importance of cadences and pre-snap reads in his offensive system, noting that proper execution is crucial for quarterbacks.

On Day 9 of training camp, the Browns’ quarterbacks showcased their deep ball capabilities. Shedeur Sanders connected with Gage Larvadain for a contested catch, and Deshaun Watson found Isaiah Bond deep down the sidelines, later connecting with Jerry Jeudy for a long touchdown. Watson also completed a touchdown pass to Bond in the back of the end zone during an 11-on-11 two-minute drill. The secondary also had a strong showing, recording three interceptions on Day 9, with Emmanuel McNeil-Warren, Donovan McMillon, and Denzel Ward each making a pick.

The team will not practice on Sunday, allowing the coaching staff to evaluate the camp’s progress before the preseason opener in Chicago next Saturday.
