Australia advances to knockout rounds
The Australia Socceroos have secured their place in the World Cup knockout rounds for the third time in their history, following a 0-0 draw against Paraguay in San Francisco. This result ensured Australia finished second in Group D, while Paraguay is also in a strong position to advance as one of the best third-placed teams.
The match, which took place on a cool night in Santa Clara, saw both teams knowing that a draw would likely be sufficient for qualification. This understanding led to periods of play lacking intense impetus, though millions of fans watched the proceedings across various platforms.
For Australia, the draw was a crucial step after their previous struggles against the USA. The USA had already confirmed their position as Group D winners, allowing them a direct path to the quarter-finals with two potential wins against teams like Bosnia and Herzegovina, Egypt, and South Korea. Australia’s second-place finish provides a platform for progression in the tournament.
Match details and player performances
The Socceroos, under coach Tony Popovic, made a number of changes to their starting lineup for the encounter. Six alterations were made from their previous match, with players like Nestory Irankunda, Cristian Volpato, and Connor Metcalfe featuring. Jordy Bos played on the right side of defense, and Lucas Herrington made his World Cup debut at left central defense.
Herrington, at 18, became the youngest Socceroo to start in a World Cup match, surpassing a record previously set by Irankunda against Turkey. He displayed composure early on, distributing the ball effectively under pressure and asserting his physicality in midfield.
In the first half, Australia showed more attacking intent. Jackson Irvine had an angled shot saved by Paraguay’s goalkeeper Orlando Gill within four minutes. Gill also parried a curling shot from Cristian Volpato. Paraguay, playing with a back-five due to the suspension of Miguel Almiron, offered minimal threat in the initial period, registering only one off-target shot.
The combination of Bos and Volpato on the right flank created Australia’s best chance of the first half. Volpato drew a defender, setting up Bos, whose shot from 20m was saved by Gill. Meanwhile, Connor Metcalfe sustained a cut above his eye after a collision, requiring medical attention.
Second half and knockout stage outlook
Paraguay displayed more attacking intent in the second half after switching to a back four. Half-time substitute Mauricio had an effort saved by Australia’s goalkeeper Patrick Beach shortly after coming on, and Julio Enciso was noted for his lively play. However, Diego Gomez, a midfielder, received a booking that will rule him out of Paraguay’s first knockout game.
Defender Omar Alderete was forced off the field due to a left knee injury. The second half also saw some tense moments for Australia, including a booking for Jackson Irvine and a back-pass mix-up between Beach and Behich that was ultimately resolved by the goalkeeper.
With both teams seemingly content with a draw, the match concluded without a goal. This result means Australia will now face the runners-up from the group featuring Egypt, Iran, and Belgium on Friday, 3 July. Paraguay is currently set to play Group E winners Germany on Monday.
The Socceroos will remain in Oakland until Wednesday before traveling to Texas for their last-32 match, which is scheduled for eight days after the draw with Paraguay.

Belgium is well-positioned to finish second in Group G, needing to defeat New Zealand to secure qualification. Their final standing also depends on the outcome of the match between Egypt and Iran, though Belgium cannot finish at the top of their group if Egypt wins.
