Spirit Airlines has officially ceased operations as of May 2, 2026, canceling all flights and suspending customer service. The airline had been a fixture in low-cost air travel for 34 years.
The abrupt shutdown stems from ongoing financial strain, including rising fuel costs and increased competition. In total, around 17,000 employees are affected by this sudden closure.
As of midday on May 2, Breeze Airways announced plans to expand its services. They will begin new routes to Charleston, S.C., Raleigh/Durham, N.C., and Tampa, Fla. This expansion aims to fill the void left by Spirit’s exit.
Atlantic City International Airport has been a primary hub for Spirit Airlines. With its departure, the airport is poised for increased traffic as other airlines vie for passengers.
Allegiant Air currently offers nonstop service to four Florida destinations from Atlantic City. American Airlines also provides a luxury motorcoach service from Atlantic City International to Philadelphia International Airport.
Breeze Airways’ founder, David Neeleman, emphasized the importance of maintaining reliable air service options for travelers. “Atlantic City is not only a great destination for travelers but also a gateway to many other metro areas,” he stated.
Passengers affected by the Spirit Airlines shutdown are advised to monitor their refunds closely. They should contact their booking providers for assistance regarding flight cancellations.
