Teams Eyeing the National Title

The landscape of college basketball continues to evolve, with Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) funds playing a role in retaining players who might otherwise have entered the NBA Draft. This has contributed to a stronger product, with several teams positioned as favorites for the upcoming season. While the NCAA Tournament often brings surprises, a core group of contenders is anticipated to vie for the 2027 men’s national championship.

To succeed in the tournament, teams often share common characteristics, including strong interior presence, players capable of creating late-game scoring opportunities against set defenses, and effective role players who can win possession battles. Historically, nearly every national championship team over the last two decades has featured a first-round draft pick on its roster, with the exception of 2016 Villanova, which later produced one.

Key Contenders and Roster Dynamics

The Illinois Fighting Illini are looking to continue their strong run, returning many key players from last year’s Final Four team. The team features the Ivisic twins, who provide size and three-point shooting, alongside David Mirkovic, a versatile forward. Stefan Vaaks joins from Providence as a lead creator, and freshman Quentin Coleman is an incoming talent who can play both on and off the ball.

Duke Blue Devils have assembled a strong roster through a combination of player retention and key additions. The return of Patrick Ngongba offers a solid foundation, while the backcourt depth is bolstered by John Blackwell from Wisconsin, joining Cayden Boozer, Caleb Foster, and freshman Deron Rippey. The Florida Gators, despite an early exit from last year’s NCAA Tournament, are anticipated to start the season ranked highly due to significant roster retention from their 2025 national championship team. Thomas Haugh, Alex Condon, and Rueben Chinyelu all withdrew from the draft to return, forming a core with considerable length and experience. Boogie Fland, who improved throughout last season, is expected to emerge as a key guard. The team’s overwhelming size in the frontcourt makes them a strong contender.

The Tennessee Volunteers have significantly revamped their roster through the transfer portal. Despite losing several players, the team has acquired considerable offensive firepower. Juke Harris, a transfer from Wake Forest, and Terrence Hill from VCU are among the new additions expected to boost the team’s scoring. Arkansas is set to feature a strong freshman class, including four five-star recruits: Jordan Smith Jr., JJ Andrews, Abdou Toure, and Miikka Muurinen, along with Davion Thompson. Smith Jr., the 2026 Gatorade National Player of the Year, is expected to be a strong two-way guard. While the team returns Billy Richmond III and adds transfer guard Jeremiah Wilkinson, the success of the Razorbacks will largely depend on the performance of their incoming freshmen.

After an injury-affected season, the Kentucky Wildcats are looking to rebound. The team secured key transfers late in the offseason, including Milan Momcilovic from Iowa State, who is noted for his shooting ability. Other additions include guards Zoom Diallo from Washington and Alex Wilkins from Furman, along with international forward Ousmane N’Diaye and returning center Malachi Moreno. This group aims to compete for an SEC title and advance further in the NCAA Tournament.

The SEC, which had the highest number of bids to the 2026 NCAA Tournament, is expected to be a highly competitive conference in the upcoming season.
