house passes farm bill — US news

The House of Representatives passed H.R. 7567, the bipartisan Farm, Food, and National Security Act of 2026, early Tuesday. The vote was 224 in favor and 200 against. This marks a significant shift in agriculture policy after eight years without a new farm bill.

Rick W. Allen emphasized the urgency, stating, “Rural America needs a new Farm Bill now, not tomorrow.” The bill aims to address ongoing agricultural challenges and improve food security.

The legislation includes key provisions to enhance access to credit management tools for producers. It also prioritizes domestic production of healthy fruits and vegetables.

Key provisions of the farm bill include:

  • Increased loan limits for guaranteed operating loans up to $3 million.
  • Increased direct ownership loans up to $850,000.
  • Modernization of rural development and energy programs.
  • Faster approval times for guaranteed lenders.

As of midday Tuesday, the focus shifts to the Senate for consideration. Brian Glenn remarked, “Food security is national security, so we need to get this farm bill across the finish line.” This reflects a growing consensus on the importance of agriculture in national stability.

The passage of this bill indicates a notable level of bipartisan support despite political divisions. Stakeholders in the farm economy are hopeful that these changes will bolster resilience in rural communities.
