Jada Pinkett Smith Pursues Legal Fees from Will Smith’s Ex-Friend

Jada Pinkett Smith is pursuing over $49,000 in legal fees from Bilaal Salaam. This follows a significant court ruling that dismissed key claims in Salaam’s $3 million emotional distress lawsuit against her.

On April 13, 2026, a judge ruled largely in favor of Jada. The court found that Salaam’s claims conflicted with California’s anti-SLAPP statute—designed to prevent retaliatory campaigns against individuals for exercising their free speech rights.

Salaam filed his lawsuit in November 2025. He alleged that Jada threatened him at a party in 2021. However, Jada has called these claims “nonsense” and part of a public harassment campaign against her.

In her defense, Jada’s legal team argues that the fees incurred are reasonable and should be awarded in full. They seek to hold Salaam accountable for the costs associated with defending against his allegations.

The dispute has roots in events following the 2022 Academy Awards incident. This incident has seemingly fueled ongoing tensions between Jada and Salaam.

As of midday, both parties are scheduled to return to court on May 13 and May 18, 2026. It remains unclear how the court will respond to Jada’s request for legal fees.

Salaam referred to himself as Will’s “best friend for nearly 40 years” in his complaint. This connection adds another layer of complexity to the situation, given Will’s estrangement from Jada revealed during a 2023 interview.

The outcome of this case could set important precedents regarding emotional distress lawsuits and the application of anti-SLAPP protections in California.
