Janet Mills Withdraws from Senate Race

Janet Mills suspended her campaign for the U.S. Senate on April 30, 2026. She cited a lack of financial resources as the reason for her decision. This withdrawal opens a clear path for Graham Platner to secure the Democratic nomination.

Mills, a two-term governor of Maine and former state attorney general, had entered the Senate race in October 2025. She aimed to challenge Republican Senator Susan Collins.

Recent polling indicated that Mills was lagging behind in support before her exit. She stated, “While I have the drive and passion… I very simply do not have… the financial resources.” This highlights ongoing challenges in fundraising within Maine politics.

Now, Graham Platner, a military veteran and oyster farmer from Sullivan, Maine, stands as the presumptive Democratic nominee. He emphasized the importance of defeating Susan Collins, saying, “We need to beat Susan Collins. That’s what this project has been about since the beginning.” Platner’s candidacy does come with controversy; he has faced scrutiny over past online comments and a tattoo associated with Nazi symbolism.

Maine is crucial for Democrats aiming to regain control of the Senate this fall. The political landscape continues to evolve as candidates prepare for an intense campaign season.
