Louisville outfielder Zion Rose has been selected by the Kansas City Royals as the sixth overall pick in the 2026 MLB Draft. Rose, a standout player for the Louisville Cardinals, is set to begin his professional baseball career following a successful collegiate run.
Rose was a key contributor for Louisville, playing in all 66 games in 2025, a season that saw the team advance to the College World Series. He also represented the USA Collegiate National Team. Despite an ankle injury that caused him to miss the first 15 games of the 2026 season, Rose maintained a .417 batting average, recorded six home runs, 44 runs scored, and 47 runs batted in.
A native of Chicago, Rose made an immediate impact upon joining Louisville. In his freshman year, he started 43 of 44 games and led the team with a .380 batting average. During his sophomore season, he was one of only two Cardinals to participate in every game as Louisville progressed to the College World Series. His performance included a six-game hit streak that spanned from the Super Regionals through Louisville’s College World Series appearance in Omaha. This streak featured a walk-off single against Arizona and a home run against Oregon State.
Rose’s Collegiate Performance and Scouting Report
After returning from his ankle injury in April of the 2026 season, Rose continued to excel. He earned First Team All-ACC and Second Team All-American honors. His statistical line for the season included a .417 batting average, a .491 on-base percentage, and a .646 slugging percentage, along with six home runs, 47 RBIs, and 24 stolen bases across just 36 games.
Coming out of high school, Rose was considered a top-100 prospect, ranked as the No. 75 overall prospect by Perfect Game USA. He had committed to Louisville over Vanderbilt and was not selected in the 2023 MLB Draft due to his commitment to the Cardinals’ program under head coach Dan McDonnell.
Rose is highly regarded for his blend of strength and speed. In 2025, he was one of only six Division-I players to achieve at least 30 extra-base hits and an equal number of stolen bases. It is suggested he might have repeated this feat in 2026 if not for his lower-body injuries. While he possesses significant power and speed, scouts note that his tendency to chase pitches outside the strike zone will need refinement at the professional level. In his final collegiate season, he recorded more walks (19) than strikeouts (15).

Originally a catcher in high school, Rose transitioned to the outfield at Louisville to ensure his bat was consistently in the lineup. Despite his speed, his defensive play in the outfield, though showing consistent improvement over his three college seasons, is an area that will require further development to become a regular at the Major League level. His arm strength is considered adequate but may not reach an elite level.
Louisville’s Draft History and Other Kentucky Prospects
Rose’s selection marks the 112th Cardinal to be drafted under head coach Dan McDonnell. McDonnell’s program has seen at least two players drafted in 19 consecutive drafts. In the previous year, following Louisville’s College World Series run, six Cardinals were selected. Right-handed pitcher Patrick Forbes was the first Louisville player chosen last year, going to the Arizona Diamondbacks with the 29th overall pick. Forbes has since made five professional appearances, including four starts, and has a 2.45 ERA over 14⅔ innings pitched in his minor league career.
Other Kentucky-area players were also selected in the draft. Tyler Bell, a shortstop from Kentucky, was chosen by the Colorado Rockies as the 10th overall pick in the first round. Bell’s two years with Kentucky enhanced his draft prospects after he was previously selected 66th in the 2024 MLB Draft. This season, Bell was the Wildcats’ third-leading hitter, batting .343 with 49 hits, nine home runs, 49 runs scored, and 29 RBIs, contributing to the team’s 33-23 record.

Another Kentucky player, Jaxon Jelkin, a right-handed pitcher, was also drafted. Jelkin, who transferred to Kentucky from Houston in 2024, posted an 8-3 record with a 4.08 ERA for the Wildcats this past season. He recorded 106 strikeouts, including a season-high of 12 batters in Kentucky’s 4-2 victory over Florida on May 9. The MLB Draft commenced with the first four rounds today and will continue with Rounds 5-20 on Saturday.
