Riley’s comments came during a news conference introducing Giannis Antetokounmpo, a two-time NBA MVP, to the Heat roster. Riley stated that while securing Antetokounmpo was a significant achievement, there is “another one we have to land,” referring to James.

Riley elaborated on the process of securing Antetokounmpo, describing a month-long discussion that culminated in a late-night call from Andy Elisburg confirming the deal. Riley used the phrase “landed the plane” to describe the successful completion of major transactions, a term he and Elisburg have frequently used over their years working together.

The addition of Antetokounmpo is seen as a substantial boost for the Heat, with Riley expressing confidence in the team’s current standing in the Eastern Conference. He emphasized that having a player of Antetokounmpo’s caliber significantly aids in the recruitment of other top-tier talent like James. Riley acknowledged the uncertainty surrounding James’ decision, stating, “I really don’t know.” He confirmed that discussions with James had taken place more than a week prior, but currently, the Heat are in a waiting period, similar to other teams. “We’re just waiting to see what he does, and then we’ll see what happens,” Riley added.

James previously announced that he would play in the 2026-27 season but would not return to the Los Angeles Lakers. During a live taping of his “Mind the Game” podcast and a panel at the CNBC/Boardroom Game Plan event, James indicated that his decision would be made soon, telling attendees, “I won’t hold you guys up too much longer.”

NBA Commissioner Adam Silver also confirmed that the league’s offseason activities, including the schedule, are dependent on James’ decision. Silver noted that James’ destination would influence key scheduling aspects, such as opening week and Christmas Day games.
