National Matcha Day, celebrated annually on May 2nd, highlights a traditional Japanese harvest tradition. This year, it features a modern twist through a partnership between Jade Leaf Matcha and Milk Bar.
Before this collaboration, National Matcha Day focused on promoting the health benefits of matcha and its cultural significance. Founded by Jade Leaf Matcha in 2021, the holiday aligns with Hachiju Hachiya, or the “88th Night,” marking the optimal time to start the spring tea harvest.
As of early Tuesday, Milk Bar announced two limited-edition menu items for National Matcha Day. These include the Strawberry Matcha Cookie and the Cereal Milk Matcha Latte. Both items will be available for just eight weeks.
The Strawberry Matcha Cookie blends sweet strawberry flavors with earthy matcha. Meanwhile, the Cereal Milk Matcha Latte combines Jade Leaf’s premium matcha with Milk Bar’s signature cereal milk.
Jade Leaf Matcha is currently recognized as the #1 matcha brand in the U.S. The popularity of matcha continues to rise, with sales climbing 86 percent over the past three years. This surge reflects growing interest in caffeine alternatives and health-conscious beverages.
Daniel Woldar from Milk Bar remarked, “Matcha can feel intimidating to people who are new to it.” He added that their goal has always been to make matcha more approachable and accessible.
The preparation of matcha involves whisking green tea powder into hot water rather than steeping leaves. This method has roots dating back to the 12th century when matcha first gained prominence in Japan.
Real matcha can only be produced in specific regions of Japan—Uji, Nishio, and Kyushu—each known for its unique cultivation techniques.
The collaboration between Jade Leaf Matcha and Milk Bar represents a significant step in promoting matcha culture. It bridges traditional practices with contemporary culinary trends.
