Sarah Danh is showing remarkable signs of recovery after being in a coma due to a sudden health crisis during her honeymoon in Japan. As of early Tuesday, she is breathing without life support and has taken her first steps.
Danh has been battling acute liver failure and other serious complications since April 9. She was medically evacuated from Tokyo to San Antonio on April 21.
An MRI revealed that she suffered a stroke causing brain damage, but doctors believe the damage could be reversible. Further testing is needed to determine the exact cause of her health decline.
Currently, she remains in the intensive care unit (ICU) and is undergoing 24/7 continuous renal replacement therapy, including dialysis, blood transfusions, and plasma exchanges.
Despite her challenges, Danh has been able to express discomfort, sadness, and happiness. She smiles, cries, and even giggles. Her uncle reported that she is regaining physical strength, having wiggled her toes and moved her arms.
However, she remains unable to talk or eat and drink independently. She will require both physical and cognitive therapy throughout her recovery process.
A GoFundMe page raised over $187,000 for her treatment before it was taken down. Khang Le, a family member, stated, “I truly believe the prayers and support you have all provided have given Sarah the strength and courage to keep fighting for her life.”
Within hours of the latest updates, Khang Le shared that Danh tested her strength with doctors’ assistance. “This morning, Sarah was able to take a few small steps,” he said.
Her emotions seem to fluctuate significantly; Khang Le noted that “her emotions seem to be present, but they often come and go.” Danh’s journey towards full recovery is still ongoing with months of treatment ahead.
