The Puma was scratched from the 2026 Kentucky Derby due to a skin infection. This unexpected turn of events leaves 19 horses competing in the prestigious race at Churchill Downs.

As of early Tuesday, The Puma is the fifth horse to be scratched since last Saturday’s draw. His absence marks a significant change in the lineup for this year’s Derby.

The Puma has a career record of 1-2-1 across four starts and has earned $442,280. He finished second in the Grade 1 Florida Derby on March 28 at Gulfstream Park, showcasing his potential as a strong contender.

Trainer Gustavo Delgado confirmed that they discovered some swelling in The Puma’s leg. “We discovered some swelling in his leg due to a skin infection,” he stated. Delgado described the situation as disappointing but reassured fans that the swelling should go down within a day or two.

Gustavo Delgado Jr. added, “It’s not something that’s a fine line. Painful but easy. Long-term he’s going to be fine. He just needs antibiotics.” The Puma will remain at Churchill Downs for a week following his scratch.

The Preakness Stakes is scheduled for May 16 at Laurel Park. However, it is unlikely that The Puma will enter that race as well.
