Cristiano Ronaldo scores PK for Portugal vs. Croatia. Watch the World Cup goal - USA Today

Ronaldo Scores in World Cup Knockout Round

Cristiano Ronaldo scored a penalty kick for Portugal during their World Cup round of 32 match against Croatia. The goal, which came in the 68th minute, equalized the game. This marks Ronaldo’s first goal in the knockout stage of a World Cup tournament.

The penalty was awarded after a teammate was fouled inside the box. Ronaldo converted the kick, sending the ball down the middle. This goal is his 11th career World Cup goal and his third in this year’s tournament, following two goals scored during the group stage against Uzbekistan.

Ronaldo is the only player to have scored in six editions of the World Cup. This tournament marks his record sixth appearance in the competition, which is the one major championship that has eluded him in his career. His role with the national team has evolved over time.

Before the start of the 2026 World Cup, Ronaldo had accumulated 143 goals in 228 international matches. He currently plays for Al-Nassr FC in the Saudi Pro League.

Toronto Cancels Fan Event Amid Heat Warning

The City of Toronto announced the cancellation of its FIFA men’s World Cup broadcast at Nathan Phillips Square. The decision was made due to an extreme heat forecast for Thursday, July 2, with temperatures expected to reach 37 degrees Celsius.

Environment Canada issued an orange heat warning for the city, indicating that high temperatures are expected to persist into Friday. The peak conditions were anticipated for Thursday, with maximum temperatures ranging between 34 and 37 degrees Celsius. Even minimum temperatures were projected to offer little relief, with the thermometer expected to read between 21 and 25 degrees Celsius.

The city stated in a release that the cancellation of all FIFA World Cup 2026 match broadcasts at Nathan Phillips Square for Thursday, July 2, was due to the extreme heat forecast and the resources required to safely manage large crowds at fan events, including Toronto Stadium and FIFA Fan Festival Toronto.

One of the games scheduled for broadcast would have featured Cristiano Ronaldo and Portugal playing against Luka Modrić and Croatia. This match was intended to be the final World Cup game shown in Toronto.

Despite the cancellation of the broadcast at Nathan Phillips Square, the city is still encouraging individuals to visit Destination Toronto’s website for information on other locations where the game can be viewed. People planning to venture out on Thursday are advised to take precautions, as the hot and humid air could lead to deteriorating air quality.

Concerns about heat exhaustion have also been raised, with symptoms including headache, dizziness, dark urine, thirst, and intense fatigue. Individuals experiencing these signs are advised to stop their activities and drink plenty of water. Heat stroke is another potential risk, characterized by hot red skin, dizziness, nausea, confusion, and changes in consciousness. Immediate medical attention is recommended for those exhibiting heat stroke symptoms, along with moving to a cool area and applying cold water or ice packs to the body while awaiting emergency services.
