The Golden State Warriors are reportedly exploring options to acquire Anthony Davis through a trade and subsequently sign LeBron James as a free agent. This strategy aims to unite a roster of established players for a championship pursuit. The team’s efforts come as free agency is set to begin this week.
To facilitate a trade for Davis, the Warriors would likely need to include Jimmy Butler, who is currently on an expiring contract valued at $57 million and recovering from a torn ACL. Additionally, the Warriors possess draft capital, including two future first-round picks and four first-round swaps, which could be utilized in any potential deal.
The Warriors’ hope is that adding Davis would help persuade James to leave Los Angeles for the Bay Area once free agency officially opens. The proposed pitch involves reuniting James with Davis, teaming up with Steph Curry and Draymond Green, and playing under coach Steve Kerr, all with the goal of securing another championship.
Draymond Green’s recent decision to opt out of his $27.7 million player option has provided the Warriors with some financial flexibility. Green could potentially re-sign with the team on a longer-term contract with a lower annual value, creating more salary cap space for James or Davis.
Reports indicate that the Los Angeles Lakers have not yet made an offer to James. If James wishes to continue playing, he might need to consider joining a new team, potentially for the mid-level exception, which is valued at just over $15 million. However, James’s agent, Rich Paul, has stated that 10 to 12 teams have inquired about adding James this summer, suggesting that sign-and-trade options could also emerge.
The Warriors could be an appealing destination for James, given his past success with Curry, Davis, and Kerr while playing for Team USA in 2024. James previously noted that his pairing with Curry felt natural due to their shared approach to basketball.
Challenges in acquiring Davis and James
Despite the Warriors’ interest, there is considerable doubt about their ability to execute these moves. The Washington Wizards have signaled their intention to retain Davis, especially after re-signing Trae Young to a four-year, $212 million extension. Wizards general manager Will Dawkins stated that Davis wants to remain with the team, and discussions for his extension are planned for mid-August.
Davis is on track to become eligible for a four-year, $275 million extension on August 6. If he were traded, his eligibility for this maximum deal would reset, making him unable to sign it until six months after the trade is finalized. The Wizards’ current actions suggest a team focused on immediate success, which may make a trade involving a 37-year-old Butler recovering from injury less appealing.
Butler, who recently participated in a Warriors team event, expressed his desire to stay with Golden State, calling it the best organization he has played for. However, he also acknowledged the possibility of a trade, stating, “If I get traded, I get traded. Their job is to win.” This indicates that Butler could be a key component in any trade discussions, potentially routed to a third team to acquire an All-Star-caliber player for Washington.
The Warriors are not the only team reportedly interested in Davis. The Portland Trail Blazers are also said to be considering a move for Davis, particularly after missing out on Giannis Antetokounmpo. Portland is also focusing on Jaylen Brown and possesses tradable salaries and future draft picks that could be attractive in a deal for a star player. This competition could drive up the price if Washington decides to engage in trade talks for Davis.
The Warriors have a history of pursuing star players without success, having previously attempted to trade for Paul George, Lauri Markkanen, Pascal Siakam, Kevin Durant, Giannis Antetokounmpo, and Kawhi Leonard. Their acquisition of Butler only occurred after Durant showed no interest in rejoining the team. With Butler now injured and Curry’s championship window potentially narrowing, the Warriors are actively exploring all available options.
Kawhi Leonard trade discussions
Separately, discussions surrounding Kawhi Leonard’s future are also ongoing, though the situation remains fluid. Reports vary, with some suggesting serious talks between the Los Angeles Clippers and the Toronto Raptors about Leonard returning to Toronto. Other reports indicate that the Toronto rumors might be a tactic to gain leverage in extension negotiations with the Clippers.
The Dallas Mavericks have also emerged as a team to watch in the Leonard trade discussions. According to multiple league sources, Mavericks president Masai Ujiri is interested in reuniting with Leonard. The Mavericks and Clippers have reportedly discussed a deal that could send Leonard to Dallas in exchange for a package including P.J. Washington, Klay Thompson, and draft picks.
Ujiri previously orchestrated the trade that brought Leonard to Toronto in 2018, a move that resulted in a championship for the Raptors a year later. However, the current Toronto team differs significantly from the one Leonard left in 2019, with changes in the front office, coaching staff, and roster. While a reunion with Toronto might be emotionally driven, Dallas represents a potential executive reunion for Ujiri.
The Clippers are reportedly facing a decision regarding Leonard, who is entering the final year of his contract. At 34 years old, Leonard recently had a strong regular season, averaging 28 points while playing 65 games. The Clippers’ era with Leonard has been marked by injuries, load management, and playoff absences, following the trade for Paul George that cost them significant draft assets.
Draymond Green, who opted out of his player option, is expected to re-sign with the Warriors for his 15th season, according to a team source.
