YNW Melly, born Jamell Maurice Demons, is spending his 27th birthday in Broward County Jail as he awaits a retrial for double murder. This comes after more than seven years of pretrial detention.

Melly’s fourth bond request was heard on April 30, 2026. He faces two counts of first-degree murder and could receive the death penalty if convicted. The judge did not issue an immediate ruling and will provide a written order later.

The previous trial ended in a mistrial in 2023 due to a deadlocked jury. Prosecutors allege that Melly staged the crime scene to resemble a drive-by shooting involving the deaths of Christopher Thomas Jr. and Anthony Williams.

Melly’s family provided civilian clothing for him to wear during the hearing. His defense has arranged for a supervised living situation if he is granted bond.

Prosecutors previously filed additional charges related to witness tampering, but those charges were later dropped. Observers note the extraordinary length of Melly’s pretrial detention and the support structure established by his family.

Audrey Gross, a family member, expressed her struggles with communication during this time: “It broke my heart not being able to communicate, just to hear his voice—it was very difficult.” Meanwhile, defense attorneys argue that Melly has adapted well to jail life, now enjoying access to an open dorm unit with recreational facilities.

The next steps in this case are unclear until the judge issues her written order regarding the bond request. A retrial is scheduled for January 2027, which will mark nearly eight years since Melly’s arrest in 2019.
