The 87th annual Greek Independence Day Parade is set for April 26, 2026, in Bowling Green, New York City. This year’s event coincides with America’s 250th anniversary of independence.
The parade will feature the Evzones, Greece’s Presidential Guard, who will participate in a Doxology at St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church. The parade starts at 1:30 PM.
This celebration commemorates Greece’s liberation from Ottoman occupation, marking 205 years since the Declaration of Independence.
This year’s festivities hold special significance due to the dual milestones. The Greek-American community has a strong connection to both events.
The flag-raising ceremony at Bowling Green will include the historic Betsy Ross flag, symbolizing American independence.
Aris Kourkoumelis emphasized the importance of this year, stating, “This year carries real weight: 250 years of American independence, 205 years of Greek independence, two extraordinary milestones.”
Ilias Katsos noted the enthusiasm for Greece’s revolution in America, saying, “Nowhere, nowhere in the world was there more enthusiasm for the revolution of 1821 but in America.”
The event is expected to draw large crowds from the Greek-American community and beyond as they celebrate their heritage.
The parade is an annual tradition on Fifth Avenue and serves as a vital link between Greek Americans and their homeland.
