Six incumbents overcame challengers in Indiana’s congressional primaries on May 5, 2026. This outcome highlights the significant role of endorsements and party loyalty.
Rep. Jim Baird defeated Craig Haggard with 60% of the votes in the 4th Congressional District. Meanwhile, Rep. Frank Mrvan won the Democratic primary in the 1st Congressional District.
Rep. André Carson secured his position by winning the Democratic primary in the 7th Congressional District with over 63% of the votes. Cynthia Wirth also won her Democratic nomination in the 6th Congressional District.
Rep. Victoria Spartz achieved a victory against Scott King by nearly 20 percentage points. In another close race, Democratic state Sen. J.D. Ford received approximately 42% of the votes in the 5th District primary.
Rep. Marlin Stutzman triumphed over Jon Kenworthy with more than 66% of the votes in the 3rd District. The results illustrate that incumbents maintained strong support despite challenges.
Baird expressed gratitude to his supporters, stating, “I’m incredibly grateful to my family and to the dedicated supporters and volunteers who stood with us every step of the way.” Carson emphasized community support, saying, “Thanks to the power of people and prayer, we’re one step closer to defeating attacks on our rights, our economy, and our democracy.”
The influence of endorsements played a crucial role this election cycle. For instance, Haggard had reportedly amassed 100 endorsements, yet still fell short against Baird.
The next general election is set for November. However, uncertainties remain about how redistricting will affect these incumbents moving forward.
