Kessler Joins Los Angeles Lakers
The Los Angeles Lakers have made a significant move by acquiring Walker Kessler, a 7-foot-2 center, in a sign-and-trade deal with the Utah Jazz. This acquisition aims to bolster the Lakers’ defense, which ranked 20th in defensive rating last season, despite being second in blocks. Kessler is recognized as one of the NBA‘s top rebounders, shot-blockers, and rim-protectors, areas where the team has sought improvement over the past few years.
To secure Kessler, Los Angeles sent the Jazz two future first-round draft picks and two first-round pick swaps. Following the trade, Kessler signed a four-year contract valued at $130 million with the Lakers. Recovery and Readiness
Kessler recently held his first media availability as a Laker, where he discussed his health and his commitment to the team. He confirmed that he is fully healthy after undergoing surgery for a left shoulder injury that ended his previous season after just five games. This injury, a torn labrum, was initially sustained during his college career and had bothered him for some time before worsening last year, leading to the decision for surgery.
Speaking about his surgically repaired shoulder, Kessler stated, “It’s great. Feels better than it’s ever felt in my life. It’s been cleared. Feels strong, feels mobile. Yeah, feels great.” He expressed that the time away from competitive play, which dates back to Halloween of last year, has reignited his passion for basketball. He is eager to return to the court and contribute to winning.
The center emphasized the impact of the Lakers’ confidence in him, noting that their investment, both monetarily and in draft assets, makes him want to give his all. “It definitely makes you feel a certain way when you know an organization believes in you,” Kessler said. “With what they have invested, they’re showing that belief, in a monetary value. Not just with money, but in [draft] assets. For me, I’m somebody that, if I know they have that belief in me, I’m going to run through a brick wall for them. That’s how I’ve been wired my whole life.”
Impact and Future Expectations
Kessler’s arrival is expected to provide a crucial presence in the paint for the Lakers, who have been relatively weak in the middle since trading Anthony Davis for Luka Doncic in February 2025. He is seen as an ideal big man to complement the star backcourt of Doncic and Austin Reaves. Reports indicate that Doncic himself strongly advocated for Kessler’s acquisition.
Throughout his four seasons in the NBA, Kessler has maintained averages of 9.5 points on 68.1% field-goal shooting, 9.3 rebounds, and 2.4 blocks in 25.3 minutes per game. Before his shoulder surgery, he had also shown early signs of developing a reliable 3-point shot, a skill he discussed with Lakers coach JJ Redick on Monday.
