Schwarber steps into All-Star lineup

Kyle Schwarber, the designated hitter for the Philadelphia Phillies, has been named as the replacement for Los Angeles Dodgers star Shohei Ohtani in the National League All-Star starting lineup. Ohtani, who was the leading vote-getter in the National League during Phase 1 of fan voting, opted not to participate due to left knee discomfort and inflammation. Schwarber will bat leadoff for the NL All-Stars.

Schwarber’s teammate, outfielder Brandon Marsh, will also be starting for the NL All-Stars, batting seventh in the order and playing right field. Both players will be featured in front of the home crowd at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia. The NL All-Star Team manager, Dave Roberts of the Dodgers, will have Schwarber at the plate early in the game.

The batting order for the NL All-Stars includes a strong contingent of left-handed hitters at the top. Following Schwarber, Juan Soto of the New York Mets will play left field and bat second. Freddie Freeman, also of the Dodgers, is in his customary No. 3 spot, playing first base. CJ Abrams, the starting shortstop for the Washington Nationals, will bat cleanup.

Other players in the NL starting lineup include Max Muncy of the Dodgers at third base, batting fifth, and Ozzie Albies of the Atlanta Braves at second base, batting sixth. After Marsh, Andy Pages, another Dodgers player, will play center field and bat eighth. Rounding out the order is Drake Baldwin of the Braves, who will be catching.

Phillies representation and pitching matchup

In addition to Schwarber and Marsh, several other Phillies players will be representing the team on the NL squad. First baseman Bryce Harper, starting pitcher Jesus Luzardo, and closer Jhoan Duran are all part of the NL All-Star team, coming off the bench and out of the bullpen.

The American League will counter with a lineup featuring mostly right-handed batters at the top against Sanchez. AL manager John Schneider of the Toronto Blue Jays will have right-handed bats in four of the first five spots. The AL leadoff spot will be filled by Los Angeles Angels center fielder Mike Trout.

Following Trout, left-hander Yordan Alvarez of the Houston Astros will bat as the designated hitter. A trio of right-handers will follow: catcher Shea Langeliers of the Athletics, third baseman Junior Caminero of the Tampa Bay Rays, and shortstop Bobby Will Jr. of the Kansas City Royals. The rest of the AL batting order will consist of right fielder Cody Bellinger of the New York Yankees, first baseman Ben Rice of the Yankees, left fielder Riley Greene of the Detroit Tigers, and second baseman Ernie Clement of the Blue Jays.
