Marco Rubio Meets Pope Leo Amid Tensions with the Vatican

Marco Rubio, the U.S. Secretary of State, will meet Pope Leo in a private audience on May 7, 2026. This meeting occurs against a backdrop of escalating tensions between the Trump administration and the Vatican over foreign policy issues.

Rubio downplayed the rift between Trump and Pope Leo regarding Iran. He emphasized that most people cannot understand why anyone would think it’s acceptable for Iran to possess nuclear weapons.

Pope Leo stated, “The church’s mission is to preach the Gospel and peace.” This statement reflects ongoing discussions about the church’s role in international diplomacy.

Rubio’s visit aims to advance bilateral relations with the Vatican and Italy. He is expected to discuss the situation in the Middle East during his visit.

As of midday, average fuel prices in the U.S. are now $4.48 per gallon, significantly higher than just under $3.17 a year ago. Rubio claimed that the U.S. is fortunate as a net exporter of oil.

Cardinal Pietro Parolin acknowledged differences but indicated that this meeting could help bridge gaps: “We understand that not everyone is on the same page; but let’s say that this is the pope’s response.”

Rubio’s comments reflect a cautious tone regarding negotiations with Iran, especially as tensions rise over nuclear capabilities.

The next expected development will be Rubio’s discussions with key Vatican officials, including Archbishop Paul Gallagher.
