The future of Michigan athletic director Warde Manuel is reportedly in doubt, with multiple reports indicating his status could be in jeopardy. This comes as findings from a significant investigation into the athletic department are expected to be presented. The investigation, conducted by the law firm of Jenner & Block, has been a central focus for higher-ups at the university.
A meeting of the U-M Board of Regents is scheduled for Thursday, July 16, in Traverse City. While no agenda has been officially announced, some reports suggest that Manuel’s status will be a topic of discussion during this meeting. A university spokesperson stated that there are no current plans to release any materials from the Jenner & Block investigation this week, though other reports indicate the results could be made public.
Investigation and Departmental Culture
The investigation by Jenner & Block initially focused on whether anyone in the athletic department was aware of a relationship between former U-M football coach Sherrone Moore and assistant Paige Shiver. This relationship violated the university’s code of conduct regarding supervisor-employee relationships. Moore was terminated on December 10 for this relationship and for allegedly lying about it.
The scope of the investigation expanded when then-interim U-M President Domenico Grasso announced a broader evaluation of the culture, conduct, and procedures throughout the athletic department. Grasso emphasized a thorough investigation to uncover any additional relevant information and assess potential misconduct by others. Manuel, a U-M alumnus who became athletic director in 2016, and the overall culture within the department were significant areas of inquiry, following several unrelated scandals during his tenure.
The expanded investigation aimed to delve deeper into the department’s culture and how it handled the initial inquiry into Moore. The results of this investigation have not yet been released, leading to a lawsuit against the university alleging violations related to the release of public records.
Manuel’s Tenure and Contract Details
Manuel signed a five-year extension as athletic director. His contract includes a base salary of $1.9 million. A clause in this contract specifies that if Manuel is terminated by the university without cause before his term ends, he would receive severance pay in monthly installments for a period equal to the remainder of his appointment or 36 months, whichever is shorter. However, termination for cause would mean the university would not be obligated to pay the remainder of his salary. An alternative could be a mutually agreed-upon buyout at a reduced figure.
During Manuel’s leadership, many Michigan teams have achieved significant success. This includes five trips to the Frozen Four for the men’s hockey team. Manuel hired the coaches for the men’s hockey team and Dusty May for men’s basketball, while Harbaugh was hired by Manuel’s predecessor.
Despite these athletic achievements, Manuel’s tenure has also been marked by various controversies. These include allegations of a toxic culture within the men’s hockey program under former coach Mel Pearson, multiple suspensions for Harbaugh and Moore related to recruiting violations, the Connor Stalions sign-stealing scandal, and the firing of men’s basketball coach Juwan Howard following an on-court incident and an off-court altercation, alongside the program’s worst season in recent history.
Recent Developments in Michigan Athletics
The past year has seen a series of notable events within Michigan athletics. In December, U-M hired former Utah coach Kyle Whittingham for a coaching position in Ann Arbor, just days before a loss in the Citrus Bowl. May, who was reportedly set to sign a long-term extension, subsequently accepted an offer from the Dallas Mavericks in the NBA last month.
Following May’s departure, Manuel appointed assistant coach and former Oklahoma State coach Mike Boynton Jr. as interim coach, later signing him to a two-year deal as the full-time coach. Additionally, Domenico Grasso, who was serving as interim president and was scheduled to leave over the summer, had his interim tag removed after Kent Syverud, the incoming president, was diagnosed with brain cancer in April.
