Microsoft will fully retire the Outlook Lite app for Android on May 25, 2026, marking the end of a service designed for users with low-end devices. Launched in 2022, Outlook Lite was tailored for smartphones with just 1GB of RAM and aimed at users in emerging markets.
Since its debut, Outlook Lite has seen significant adoption, surpassing 10 million downloads on the Play Store by September 2024. However, the app will cease fetching new emails and disable its core features after the retirement date.
Microsoft recommends that current users transition to the full Outlook app for Android, which offers a more comprehensive email experience. “If you like the Outlook Lite experience, consider switching to the full Outlook app for Android,” a Microsoft spokesperson stated.
The app was designed to function effectively over 2G and 3G networks, catering to users with limited internet access. However, it did not support cloud services or enterprise features such as Data Loss Prevention (DLP).
Outlook Lite was pulled from the Google Play Store on October 6, 2025, as part of Microsoft’s strategy to streamline its offerings and focus on the primary Outlook Mobile app. “The retirement of Outlook Lite is part of a broader effort to reduce overlap and focus development and support on Microsoft Outlook Mobile,” the company explained.
For users still relying on Outlook Lite, an Upgrade option will appear, prompting them to install the main Outlook Mobile app. This transition is crucial as Microsoft phases out the Lite version.
As the deadline approaches, users are urged to make the switch to avoid disruption in their email services. The Outlook Lite app, which was ad-supported similar to its Windows counterpart, will no longer be available for use post-retirement.
Details remain unconfirmed regarding any additional features that may be introduced in the full Outlook app as part of this transition.
