Justice Neil Gorsuch addressed concerns about Supreme Court leaks during a recent talk show appearance. He emphasized balancing transparency and the need for confidential discussions among justices.

Gorsuch raised issues regarding internal deliberation leaks, which have sparked ongoing debates about transparency in the judiciary. He noted that while live audio from courtroom proceedings enhances openness, confidential discussions are crucial for reaching consensus.

He stated, “We want some transparency, but we also have to leave room for candid conversations and deliberations with one another.” This statement underscores the tension between public access and judicial privacy.

During his appearance, Gorsuch also promoted his new children’s book titled Heroes of 1776: The Story of the Declaration of Independence. His remarks come after a recent ruling on the Voting Rights Act, suggesting a rightward shift in the court’s stance.

The Supreme Court is currently deliberating on whether police use of phone tracking data violates constitutional protections against unreasonable searches. In the Chatrie vs. U.S. case, Gorsuch expressed skepticism about broad searches without a specific suspect.

The justices are wary of barring police from obtaining precise location history from tech companies like Google or cellphone providers. Gorsuch questioned, “Is it OK to search ‘all the rooms in a hotel for a gun or all the storage units or all bank deposit boxes for the pearl necklace that has been stolen?'”

The Supreme Court is expected to issue a ruling in Chatrie vs. U.S. by the end of June. Observers are closely monitoring these developments as they could impact privacy rights and law enforcement practices.
