Scottie Scheffler’s streak ends at Genesis Scottish Open

Scheffler’s Streak Concludes

Scottie Scheffler, the world’s top-ranked golfer, missed the cut at the Genesis Scottish Open, marking the end of a significant streak. This event is his first missed cut since August 2022, concluding a run of 78 consecutive weekend appearances in tournaments. His performance at the Renaissance Club saw him finish at two over par, missing the cut line by two strokes.

The conclusion of this streak also means the end of his equally impressive top-25 streak, which stood at 37. The last time Scheffler finished outside the top 25 was 23 months ago at the 2024 BMW Championship, where he placed T33. Prior to that event, he had won three of his previous five starts and went on to win his next two starts.

The unexpected early departure from the tournament provides Scheffler with an earlier trip to Royal Birkdale on the west coast of England for the upcoming Open Championship. Scheffler expressed pride in his consistency, acknowledging that while some recent tournaments, particularly Signature Events, have not included cuts, his overall performance has been strong. He noted that he does not believe he has finished outside the top 20 many times this year.

Rahm Reflects on Scheffler’s Consistency

Fellow golfer Jon Rahm provided context for Scheffler’s remarkable consistency. Rahm, who was once in the midst of his own 25-straight cuts-made streak that ended due to illness, expressed surprise upon hearing the news of Scheffler’s missed cut.

Rahm highlighted that Scheffler’s impressive run was not just about making cuts, but about consistently being in contention to win. He observed that it seemed Scheffler had a chance to win every week, and even when making the cut, he was rarely finishing in the middle of the pack. Rahm emphasized that Scheffler was always in the hunt, often with a chance on Sunday’s back nine, even if it was an outside possibility. This consistent presence in contention, including in majors and elevated events, was what Rahm found most impressive.

Both Scheffler and Rahm were prominent competitors in the spring of 2023, frequently trading victories on the PGA Tour. During that period, Rahm had taken the title of World’s Best Golfer from Scheffler. Their paths have diverged since the 2023 season, but both golfers are recognized for their ability to maintain a high competitive baseline.

Tournament Leaders and Other Notable Players

While Scheffler’s tournament concluded early, the Genesis Scottish Open saw a competitive field heading into the weekend. Rory McIlroy maintained a share of the lead, tied at nine-under par with Jordan Smith and Tom Kim. McIlroy, the world No. 2, had an opening-round 65 and followed it with a second-round 66.

McIlroy’s second round included four birdies on the front nine, going out in 31 for the second consecutive day. He came back in level-par 35, with a bogey on the par-four 13th immediately followed by a birdie on the 14th. Wayne Riley of Sky Sports Golf commented on McIlroy’s performance, noting his great play and how he did everything correctly, appearing dangerous for both the current championship and the final major of the season.

Korea’s Kim also carded rounds of 65 and 66, while England’s Smith recorded the best round of Friday with a 63, securing an early clubhouse lead. A total of 12 players are within two shots of the lead, and 37 are within five shots.

Among other notable players, Matt Fitzpatrick is one shot back at eight under par, following a round of 65 that featured five successive birdies on the back nine. Australia’s Min Woo Lee is also at eight under. Home favorite Bob MacIntyre, the 2024 winner, is in contention at seven under after a round of 66, which included four birdies across his final six holes. Last year’s champion, Chris Gotterup, also carded a 65.

In addition to Scheffler, other prominent players who did not make the cut include Ludvig Åberg, Xander Schauffele, and PGA champion Aaron Rai. McIlroy expressed satisfaction with his score, particularly given the strengthening winds in the afternoon wave, and feels well-positioned to contend for a second Scottish Open title.
