shamar elkins — US news

Early Sunday morning, a tragic mass shooting unfolded in Shreveport, Louisiana. Eight children were killed in the incident. The shooter was identified as 31-year-old Shamar Elkins.

The ages of the children ranged from just 3 to 11 years old. Seven of the deceased were Elkins’ children; one was a cousin. This horrific event has shocked the community and raised urgent questions about domestic violence.

As of midday Sunday, details remain unconfirmed regarding the exact motive behind the shooting. However, it has been described as a domestic violence incident. Elkins had previously expressed stress about his relationship with his wife.

Two women were critically injured during the shooting—one of whom was Elkins’ wife. The circumstances surrounding their injuries are still unclear.

Within hours of the shooting, police located Elkins after he fled the scene in a carjacked vehicle. He was confronted by law enforcement and killed during the encounter.

The Caddo Parish Coroner’s Office reported that this is now the deadliest mass shooting in the U.S. since January 2024. Local officials have described the scene as “disgusting and evil.” Community members are grappling with immense grief and confusion.

Tom Arceneaux, a local official, stated, “This is a tragic situation, maybe the worst tragic situation we’ve ever had in Shreveport.” Yet many are struggling to comprehend how such an event could occur.

Elkins had a prior conviction for illegal use of a firearm. This raises further questions about gun access and safety measures in domestic violence situations. The community is left to mourn and seek answers amidst this tragedy.
