The 2026 Stagecoach Festival faced an unprecedented challenge on April 25, when high winds forced a temporary evacuation at the Empire Polo Club in Indio, California. This marked the first full evacuation in the festival’s history since its inception in 2007.
As of early Saturday morning, wind gusts reached between 60-65 mph. The decision to evacuate came after consultations between Indio police and Goldenvoice, the festival organizers. Attendees received notifications through loudspeakers and push alerts on the Stagecoach app.
The evacuation lasted about one hour. Within that time, approximately 80,000 fans were relocated safely. The festival resumed operations shortly after the evacuation order was lifted.
Despite the disruption, the event continued successfully until its conclusion on April 26. Over 100 artists performed across seven stages during the three-day festival. Headliners included Cody Johnson, Lainey Wilson, and Post Malone.
However, Journey’s performance was canceled due to the evacuation. Many attendees expressed concern about safety and comfort during the windy conditions.
Sgt. Abe Plata noted that the evacuation went smoothly from a law enforcement perspective, aided by the timing of the incident late at night. Yet some festival-goers voiced frustration over having to leave their spots during performances.
Elika Dadsetan highlighted the environmental impact of such events, stating that deserts are sensitive ecosystems often misunderstood as empty spaces. The concert industry must balance entertainment with ecological considerations.
The successful resumption of the festival underscores its resilience and commitment to music festival safety despite unforeseen challenges.
