Taxpayers Divided Over Trump’s $400 Million Ballroom Proposal

Republicans are divided on whether to use taxpayer funds for Trump’s proposed $400 million White House ballroom. Some party members advocate for private donations instead.

Previously, Donald Trump claimed that the ballroom would be “taxpayer-free.” However, Senator Lindsey Graham now suggests using taxpayer dollars for the project.

This division comes as 55% of Americans report their financial situation is worsening. This is the highest level in 25 years.

The IRS’ taxpayer advocate recently noted that tens of millions of American taxpayers might be eligible for refunds due to COVID-19 filing deadline postponements. Affected taxpayers must file their claims by July 10, 2026.

Funding the ballroom could have significant implications. The estimated $400 million cost could fund:

  • Free school lunches for 470,000 kids for a year
  • Free health care for 50,000 Americans for a year
  • $10,000 raises for 40,000 teachers

Some Republicans express strong opposition to using taxpayer money. They argue that funds should come from private sources rather than from struggling families.

Democrats remain firmly against using taxpayer funds for the ballroom project. Kendall Witmer criticized the idea, stating, “Donald Trump and Republicans have jacked up prices for working families and now they want us to pay for Trump’s gold-plated ballroom.”

Lindsey Graham defended the proposal, saying, “This is not about Trump. It’s about the presidency of the United States.” He added that taxpayer funds should be used wisely.

The debate continues as both sides weigh the financial burdens on taxpayers against the potential benefits of a new presidential venue.
