A tragic murder-suicide occurred on Monday evening, shocking the Houston restaurant community. Matthew Mitchell, 52, is identified as the suspect in this incident.

Thy Mitchell, 39, and their two children, ages 4 and 8, were also found dead at their home on Kingston Street in River Oaks. The couple owned two restaurants: Traveler’s Table and Traveler’s Cart.

The shooting was reported around 5:30 p.m. on Monday. Evidence suggests that Matthew shot his family before taking his own life.

The Mitchells were celebrated figures in the culinary landscape. They were named the 2025 Restaurateurs of the Year by the Houston Chapter of the Texas Restaurant Association.

Friends and colleagues expressed their shock. Chef Jassi Bindra remarked, “She was so energetic. She loved the restaurant world.” Craig Howard added, “It looked like this was a successful power couple doing this together.”

As of midday Tuesday, officials have not confirmed the identities of the deceased. The Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences is still verifying details.

This incident has raised concerns about domestic violence within families in the restaurant industry. Experts highlight that even seemingly successful couples may face hidden struggles.
