England’s World Cup Semi-Final Exit
England head coach Thomas Tuchel has addressed criticism regarding his tactical decisions following the team’s elimination from the World Cup semi-finals. The team lost to Argentina after initially holding a 1-0 lead. Tuchel stated he is not interested in what he termed a “blame game” and emphasized the need for the team to close the gap on leading football nations.
The coach’s strategy, particularly the positioning of Harry Kane in a defensive role during the match, drew comments from figures including Donald Trump. Trump, speaking during a press conference with Fifa president Gianni Infantino, questioned the decision to make England’s “best player” a defensive one when the team was ahead. Tuchel, however, questioned the use of Trump as a “witness” and maintained that Kane was following instructions within a deep defensive block.
Tuchel explained that the decision to defend in a deep block was a collective team effort, stating, “We defend as a 10 and as an 11. Together as a team, the team spirit, the togetherness, the mentality that this team built in the last six and a half weeks, is not to be questioned.” He acknowledged that the team was not active enough to escape the deep block.
Reflecting on the Defeat and Future Steps
Despite the defeat, Tuchel expressed no regrets over his in-game decisions. He stated that he made choices based on instinct, intuition, and experience to help the team. “I would regret it if we didn’t react. But I have no regrets over the decision itself,” Tuchel said, reflecting on the stress of making decisions during a match.
The coach highlighted that England is not yet at the level of nations like France, Spain, and Argentina, who almost expect to win the title. He stressed that there is a gap to close, and the team will continue to work towards that goal. England is set to play France in the third-place playoff in Miami, a match Tuchel described as one “no one wants to play in.”
The team held its final training session at their Kansas City base before traveling to Miami, though their arrival was delayed by thunderstorms. Players like Jude Bellingham and Jordan Henderson were seen at a barbecue on Thursday night. John Stones conveyed the team’s ongoing pain and suffering from the semi-final exit, noting that players take such defeats personally.
Stones added that the team believed they could win the tournament, making the semi-final elimination particularly painful. “I think everyone felt that [we could win it]. That’s why to go out in a semi-final hurts even more because we believed so much and didn’t get to where we believe we should be,” he stated.
Royal Reactions to England’s Loss
The semi-final defeat also elicited emotional responses from members of the British royal family. Prince Harry attended the TIME100 Sports Gala in New York City without his wife, Meghan Markle, and expressed his sadness over England’s 2-1 loss to Argentina. When asked if he was saddened, he responded, “Of course.”

During the event, Prince Harry was observed speaking with TIME CEO Jessica Sibley. The Duke of Sussex’s appearance followed his return from a visit to the UK, where he reunited with members of the royal family, including King Charles and Queen Camilla, along with his children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet.
Other notable figures also reacted to the outcome. David Beckham, who watched the match in Atlanta, Georgia, was visibly emotional and was comforted by his son, Cruz Beckham. Prince William posted a message on X, expressing pride in the team’s efforts and acknowledging their inspiring fight and belief throughout the tournament.
Prince William’s message read, “England, you gave it everything and we are all so proud of you. Thank you to everyone on and off the pitch, for an incredible tournament. The fight and belief you have shown has inspired us all. The most complete England team in a tournament. Hold your heads high.”

The private meeting between Prince Harry’s family and King Charles at Highgrove House on July 10 marked the first time in four years that King Charles had seen his grandchildren, Archie and Lilibet.
