A U.S. military KC-135 Stratotanker declared an emergency while flying near Qatar, raising concerns amid escalating tensions with Iran.
The aircraft transmitted a “7700” general distress signal before disappearing from tracking screens. It reportedly took off from Al Dhafra Air Base in the United Arab Emirates.
As of early Tuesday, a U.S. defense official stated that the aircraft landed safely. However, the ultimate fate of the plane remains uncertain.
The KC-135 is designed to extend the range of U.S. bombers and fighter aircraft by refueling them mid-air. The aircraft was conducting refueling operations over the Persian Gulf when it declared the emergency.
Within hours of its disappearance, H125 light utility helicopters were observed in the area searching for the aircraft.
Iranian media have reported on this incident, highlighting the potential implications for regional security. Officials have not confirmed whether the tanker was en route to a specific base at the time.
This incident marks another chapter in ongoing tensions between the U.S. and Iran in the region.
