Miguel Vargas, representing the Chicago White Sox, hit a solo home run in his first All-Star Game appearance, contributing to the American League‘s 4-0 victory over the National League in Philadelphia. Vargas’s blast was the first home run of the 2026 MLB All-Star Game and helped extend the AL’s lead.

The third baseman’s 433-foot solo shot came in the top of the eighth inning off Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Justin Wrobleski. The ball landed in the second deck in left field, adding an insurance run for the American League. This home run was also the only extra-base hit recorded during the entire game.

AL Secures Victory in Philadelphia

The American League secured a 4-0 shutout win against the National League. The AL’s all-time record in the Midsummer Classic now stands at 49-45. The game saw strong pitching performances from the American League, with 11 arms used throughout the contest. The National League bats struggled, managing only three hits and striking out 15 times.

American League starting pitcher Dylan Cease delivered a strong performance, striking out the side in his outing. His only blemish was a walk to Freddie Freeman. Cease used 24 pitches in the inning and ultimately earned the win. Following Cease, seven relievers from the AL bullpen earned a hold.

The National League‘s first hit came in the bottom of the fourth inning from Juan Soto, off pitcher Joe Ryan. Later, in the bottom of the eighth, Pete Crow-Armstrong singled up the middle. In the bottom of the ninth, Otto Lopez of the Marlins hit a base hit to right field with two outs before the game concluded.

Early Lead and Key Performances

The American League All-Stars established an early 3-0 lead against National League starter Cristopher Sánchez. Sánchez, pitching in his home ballpark, initially struck out Mike Trout but then faced difficulties, allowing three of the four AL runs and taking the loss. Yordan Alvarez recorded the first hit of the game and later scored. Sánchez had walked Shea Langeliers and Bobby Witt Jr. to load the bases before getting a ground out from Junior Caminero.

All three early runs for the AL scored with two outs. Two New York Yankees All-Stars contributed back-to-back RBI singles. Cody Bellinger hit a 101 mph, two-run single, and Ben Rice followed with a 107 mph hit up the middle to add another run. Bellinger’s two-run single proved crucial and he was named the All-Star Game MVP.

After the early offensive burst, the bats from both sides quieted down for several innings. The National League bullpen also showed solidity. Riley O’Brien took over in the third inning, and a pitch hit Junior Caminero in the hand during his second at-bat, forcing him to exit the game. Miguel Vargas then took over for Caminero. Reports indicated that X-rays on Caminero’s hand were negative, and he is expected to start the next series beginning Friday.

Vargas was the first White Sox player to enter the game. In his initial at-bat, he hit a 104.3 mph line out to Andy Pages in center field. He later connected for his solo home run, which was a significant moment for the American League. Other South Siders who entered the game included Tristan Peters, who played right field for Bellinger in the bottom of the sixth, and Munetaka Murakami, who played first base in the bottom of the seventh. Both Peters and Murakami had one at-bat each and struck out, with Murakami facing Mason Miller‘s 102 mph fastball.
