A late spring snowstorm has caused widespread school closures across Colorado on May 6, impacting major districts and universities.
As of early Tuesday, classes are canceled at Colorado State University due to hazardous travel conditions. Poudre, Thompson, and Weld RE-4 school districts have also closed their doors for the day.
Denver Public Schools announced the cancellation of classes due to severe weather. Littleton Public Schools, JeffCo Public Schools, Boulder Valley School District, Douglas County School District, and Aurora Public Schools followed suit.
Over 120 closings and delays have been reported statewide. The winter storm warning remains in effect for the Denver metro area from 8 p.m. Tuesday to 3 p.m. Wednesday.
Forecasts predict 5-8 inches of snow along the I-25 Corridor and up to 12 inches near the foothills. These conditions have made travel unsafe.
Classes at Front Range Community College were canceled for in-person students, but online courses will continue as scheduled. Red Feather Lakes Elementary and other local schools also reported closures due to unsafe transportation conditions.
As of midday, over 28,000 Xcel Energy customers are without power. Additionally, nearly 500 flights faced delays at Denver International Airport.
The state’s largest district, Denver Public Schools, stated that safety concerns drove their decision to cancel classes. Officials urge residents to stay indoors if possible.
Authorities continue to monitor the situation as snowfall persists. They have not provided information on when normal operations will resume.
Weather forecasts indicate that the storm may linger into Wednesday afternoon. Communities are urged to take precautions during this severe weather event.
