DEA Reschedules Certain Marijuana Products

dea — US news

The DEA has rescheduled certain marijuana products to Schedule III. This marks a significant shift in federal drug policy. However, recreational marijuana remains classified as Schedule I.

The final order took effect on April 22, 2026. It allows FDA-approved marijuana products and state-licensed medical marijuana to be classified as Schedule III. The change implies new regulations and potential business opportunities for manufacturers and dispensers.

As of today, the annual fee for manufacturers’ DEA registration stands at $3,699. Distributors will pay $1,850 annually, while dispensers face a three-year fee of $888.

Officials have not confirmed the exact implications for recreational users. The DEA plans to hold a hearing on June 29, 2026, to consider broader changes to marijuana’s status.

In related news, the Hoboken Police Department will participate in the DEA’s National Prescription Drug Take Back Day on April 25, 2026. Residents can drop off unneeded or expired prescription drugs at designated locations from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

E-cigarette and vaping devices can also be disposed of during this event if batteries are removed. Police Chief Steven Aguiar emphasized that this initiative provides residents with a secure way to dispose of medications.

This is a landmark development in federal drug policy—one that carries significant legal and business consequences. The rescheduling is expressly limited to FDA-approved products and state-licensed medical marijuana.

What comes next remains uncertain. The upcoming hearing could reshape cannabis policy further, but for now, the focus is on the implications of this recent change.
