Maitland Ward claims young actors were treated like ‘products’ in Hollywood. This revelation sheds light on the darker side of the entertainment industry.
Ward described her experience as a ‘factory kind of environment.’ She felt immense pressure to conform and suppress any discomfort. This pressure reflects a broader issue within the Hollywood machine, especially concerning child actors.
From 1994 to 1996, Ward starred as Jessica Forrester in The Bold and the Beautiful. She later played Rachel McGuire on Boy Meets World from 1998 to 2000. During these years, she struggled with feelings of unease in her own body.
Ward compared her experiences to those of Britney Spears. She highlighted the ‘twisted male gaze’ that permeates Hollywood, affecting many young women. “It was all for this like twisted male gaze that Hollywood was just inflicting on everybody,” she stated.
In 2022, she published her memoir, Rated X: How Porn Liberated Me from Hollywood. The memoir details her journey and aims to resonate with women facing societal pressures. Ward feels empowered and free after sharing her story.
She believes many young actors faced similar treatment and were often cast aside when no longer needed. “It’s kind of freeing to say, ‘Oh, wait, you felt that way too? And you went through a similar situation,'” she noted.
Ward’s upcoming show Hollywood Demons: Child Stars Gone Wild premieres on April 27, 2026. This new project may further explore the challenges faced by child actors in the industry.
