Iran peace proposal

Donald Trump stated he is likely to reject Iran’s peace proposal, citing insufficient consequences for Iran’s actions over the last 47 years.

Iran presented a 14-point peace proposal that includes a 30-day phase to transform a ceasefire into a complete end to the war. The proposal calls for the US to lift sanctions, end its blockade, and withdraw US forces from the region.

Trump emphasized that he cannot imagine accepting the plan without significant penalties for Iran. He said, “I will soon be reviewing the plan that Iran has just sent to us, but can’t imagine that it would be acceptable in that they have not yet paid a big enough price for what they have done to Humanity, and the World, over the last 47 years.”

Iran rejected the US demand to dismantle its nuclear infrastructure but proposed a 15-year freeze on uranium enrichment. However, Iranian officials clarified that their proposal did not include any clauses related to nuclear issues.

The US has responded through Pakistani mediators. They want Iran to relinquish its stockpile of over 400 kg of highly enriched uranium. This situation complicates ongoing nuclear negotiations.

Iran’s proposal also suggests creating a new control mechanism for the Strait of Hormuz—a critical waterway affecting 20 percent of the world’s oil and gas supplies. As of midday Tuesday, Iran has been blocking nearly all shipping from the Gulf for over two months.

A senior Iranian official noted that under this framework, negotiations over the more complicated nuclear issue have been moved to a final stage to foster a conducive atmosphere for discussions.

The outcome of these ongoing negotiations remains unclear. Officials have not confirmed the exact wording of the US response to Iran’s proposal.
