Salmonella Outbreak Sickens 23 Inmates at St. Joseph County Jail

salmonella — US news

A Salmonella outbreak at St. Joseph County Jail has sickened 23 inmates as of April 29, 2026. Symptoms include diarrhea, dehydration, and fever.

The jail kitchen passed a health inspection just four days prior, on April 25, with no critical violations reported. Two minor non-critical violations were noted: standing water and mold.

Most inmates have since recovered, but a few remain under treatment for food poisoning symptoms. The source of the outbreak is currently under investigation.

In related news, Ghirardelli has recalled powdered drink mixes due to a potential salmonella risk linked to a powdered milk ingredient. So far, no illnesses have been reported in connection with this recall.

Officials have not confirmed what specifically caused the outbreak at the jail. Test results from the health department are still pending.

Food contaminated with Salmonella bacteria does not usually appear spoiled, making detection challenging. Vulnerable populations such as infants, children, seniors, and those with weakened immune systems face higher risks of serious illness from Salmonella infections.
