Medicare: Mark Cuban Criticizes Advantage for High Costs to Taxpayers

Mark Cuban has sharply criticized Medicare Advantage for imposing higher costs on taxpayers compared to traditional Medicare. He argues that this system burdens American families financially.

As of early Tuesday, Cuban stated that every American family pays approximately $800 annually to support costly Medicare Advantage plans. He believes that this model is unsustainable and calls for legislative reforms.

The Medicare Savings Program (MSP) in Rhode Island currently has an asset limit that can disqualify low-income seniors from receiving much-needed aid. In 2026, the asset limit will be $9,950 for individuals and $14,910 for couples.

More than half of those eligible for Medicare choose Medicare Advantage, which was intended to be a cost-effective alternative. However, Cuban claims that taxpayers end up paying more for these plans than what it costs to support traditional Medicare.

Cuban’s pharmacy, Cost Plus Drugs, operates on a different model—marking up prices by no more than 15% and providing transparent pricing. He believes similar transparency is needed in the health insurance industry.

The bipartisan “Break Up Big Medicine Act,” co-sponsored by Senators Josh Hawley and Elizabeth Warren, aims to tackle these issues. Cuban argues that dismantling large insurance companies could lead to lower health care costs.

In addition, Carol Anne Costa from the Senior Agenda Coalition of Rhode Island emphasized that “Rhode Island should not force low-income people on Medicare to spend themselves into poverty to get help paying for health care.” This highlights the urgent need for reform in the MSP.

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services has finalized a 2.48 percent rate increase for Medicare Advantage in 2027. Observers expect ongoing discussions about how to address these rising costs and improve access to affordable health care.
